SF is often seen as a masculine genre of writing. The women in this genre are often stereotyped and/or objectified. Cite specific evidence that this novel either supports the notion that women are stereotyped/objectified or refutes the notion that women are stereotyped/objectified.
1.) pg. 30 "You are one of us, Nomad. You must marry each month and beget many children. That will be scientific. But I am the first."
This shows that the scientific people don't place much value on women if they are tossed around from man to man just to get pregnant.
-Jess Filegar
Response: I agree with you Jess. It seems like woman are only used to have children to give more scientific knowledge.
-Kelsey Baker
2.)pg.44 "In the homes of the wealthy, the rooms of the female members were blind, without windows or doors, open only to the jaunting of intimate members of the family. Thus was morality maintained and chastity defended." this seems very 18th-19th century-esque. it shows that women weren't trusted to make their own decisions about excursions with men. without windows and doors there would be no way they could escape and no way for a boy to get in. however it is degrading to women, saying they can't be trusted. ~nicole dengler
Response- I believe that it is not he women that can't be trusted, but the believe that if a man sees the girl/women, they might go after her and they just want to keep the girls safe. The want to keep them pure minded until they are old enough to face life on their own. They want to keep the hatred, hardships and evil of the world out of the young girls minds. *Kayle Giarth*
pg 29. Choose, The SCientific people practice natural Selection. Be scientific in your choice. Be genetic" This shows that all the people on this asteriod treat women like just another object. He didnt want Gully to choose by any other reason than science... I think this shows that women are not like people to them but objects, to be picked up and compared like any other thing around them.
-John Benton
Response: I agree with John, the women are no more than an object to them. Gully has a choice of three women. I also think the reason they choose based on genetics is so they can try to have "perfect" kids. - Caden Terchanik
pg 74. "A harem. A place where women are kept on ice. After thousands years of civilization (it says here) we're still property. Jaunting's such a danger to our virtue, our value, our mint condition, that we're locked up like gold plate in a safe. There's nothing for us to do... nothing respectable. No jobs. No careers. There's no getting out, Gully, unless you bust out and smash all the ruls." This still shows that women still dont have a equal life style as the men. That since they can jaunt, they are held up in little rooms, so they cant see the outside world. I also think the men are scared to let the women jaunt, because they feel they are losing contol.-Erica Keim
Response: Along with it possibly being a control issue, the men seem to think that they're protecting the women by locking them up. Women are stereotyped to be defenseless and weak, and I think that plays a big role in the situation.
-Jess Filegar
pg 74. "You don't know what jaunting's done to women, Gully. It's locked us up, sent us back to the seraglio." i feel as though i dont need to continue the quote because erica already posted the definition of the seraglio, but i think this first bit is also important. It not only shows the great effects jaunting has on women but it also shows how the men percieve it. Obviously the men, or atleast gully, don't realize how jaunting has affected women. They dont appreciate the way being locked up makes the women feel like they are viewed as defensless and meek. ~nicole dengler
Response: I agree with Nicole that the men take jaunting for granted and that they forget that women feel defensless and meek when they are locked up. I also think something will happen later in the book that will give women a chance to jaunt without being locked up. -Chanelle Meadows
Pg. 30 "Yours. You are one of us, Nomad. You must marry every month and beget many children. That will be scientific. But I am the first." Women aren't treated equally to men. They are just "baby makers" to society according to the scientific people. - Sasha Cochran
